Присутствие фактора F в бактериальной клетке как бы определяет её принадлежность к мужскому полу. В числе прочих элементов фактор F содержит гены, необходимые для синтеза F-пилей ( половых ворсинок).

Прокариотический фактор инициации трансляции: основный белок с молекулярной массой 21-23 кД, имеет сильное сродство к диссоциированной 30S-субчастице рибосомы и, связываясь с ней, препятствует ее ассоциации с 50S-субчастицей, способствует ассоциации 30S-субчастицы с мРНК.
